Strike Indicator Double Uni

How to tie the Strike Indicator - Double Uni Knot. Instead of a pre-made yarn indicator or the ubiquitous Thingamabobber Strike Indicators, you can also loop custom size pieces of yarn directly onto your leader using a Double Uni Knot. This can be done anywhere two lines are joined such as where the leader and tippet meet.

A nice feature of using this method is that the switch from nymph fishing to dry fly fishing is simple and quick. Grabbing the yarn between thumb and forefinger and pulling will separate the knots just enough to free the yarn to slide out. The knot can be re-tightened, the fly changed to a dry to match the hatch you are witnessing, and you are good to go!

Strike Indicator - Double Uni Knot Tying Instructions

  • Tie the tippet to the leader using a Double Uni Knot. Once both sides of the Uni are tied, slide the two knots only part way together; leave an opening large enough to accommodate the yarn. Note that a Blood Knot could also be used here but it is more difficult.

  • Insert the yarn into the opening and pull the ends of the lines in opposite directions to tighten down the knot onto the yarn.

  • Fluff-up the yarn and apply floatant.
