Ashley's Bend

This useful knot works well in a wide variety of materials, even bungee cords. Because it will accept pulling in any of the four directions of its ends, it can be used to form the center

of a four-way tie-down. Credited to Clifford Ashley, this knot is very dependable and can be untied even after heavy loading. See Animated Ashley's Bend below.

Ashley's Bend Knot Tying Instructions

  • Form a loop at the end of one rope, preparing to tie it into an Overhand Knot.
  • Take the end of the second rope and feed it up through the first loop, making its
own loop to be tied into an Overhand Knot.
  • Complete the two Overhand Knots, taking care to feed the working ends through
each other’s loop as well as their own.
  • Pull all ends to tighten.
