  1. Form an overhand loop in the rope.
  2. Then form a second one the same as the first, turning in the same direction.
  3. Cross the loops onto each other such that the ropes intersect and not merely sit upon each other.  
  4. Place the formed clove hitch over the post and pull ends to tighten.
